U.S. University Inquiries for JFDP

Junior Faculty Development Program – A Program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the United States Department of State.

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, together with American Councils for International Education (ACTR/ACCELS) is pleased to announce opportunities for U.S. institutions to host participants of the Junior Faculty Development Program (JFDP) for the Spring 2010 semester. JFDP is a non-degree, professional development program intended to provide opportunities for university faculty from Eurasia and Southeast Europe to expand their knowledge and expertise in their academic fields by attending classes and working with faculty members at universities in the United States. The goal of the program is to contribute to the development of higher education in participating countries. To this end, the JFDP provides opportunities for university-level instructors with strong potential for leadership with training in curriculum development and teaching methodologies. Participants in the JFDP are also encouraged to forge relationships between U.S. universities and universities in these countries and regions in order to support ongoing contact and collaboration. JFDP Fellows work closely with faculty mentors from host universities in the United States to outline new courses, gather new teaching materials and resources, expand their knowledge in their fields of study, garner new educational perspectives, and act as cultural and academic resources sharing information about their home countries with U.S. faculty, students, and community members. Individuals may apply for fields in the humanities and social sciences. Fellows do not earn academic degrees, credits or transcripts through the JFDP, and must return to their home countries after completing the program.

The competition is open to citizens from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. The U.S. Embassy in Tashkent holds a separate JFDP competition for citizens of Uzbekistan with the same application and eligibility requirements - inquiries about hosting JFDP Fellows from Uzbekistan are also handled through American Councils.

To qualify for a JFDP Fellowship, an applicant must:

  • hold a university degree;
  • be currently teaching at an institution of higher education;
  • have at least two years of teaching experience at an institution of higher education; and,
  • have a mastery of the English language.

Each JFDP Fellow will spend a total of five (5) months (January-May 2010) in the United States. American Councils is responsible for placing Fellows at U.S. host universities and for providing logistical support for the Fellows throughout their stay in the United States. The JFDP Fellowship provides round-trip international and domestic transportation, health insurance plan benefits, monthly stipends, and a professional development fund.
