It's all about using the funding research databases, and using them effectively. The Foundation Directory Online allows you to search by field of interest (what you do, e.g. linguistics), where you do it (your country), and type of support needed (research). The process is quick and easy. Your search will produce a list of prospective funders and a lot of information about each one, including application requirements.

I agree with you, but the problem is, at least for countries not in the EU, is to FIND the right funder. Can you help us with some links?

The database I just described includes MANY American grantmakers that fund in other countries. To find funders located in Europe, you can consult the European Foundation Centre. I would suggest using both of these.

Finding Smaller Research Grants

I couldn't agree more on your words above " The proposal does not stand alone". My experience so far is with relatively large EU-funded grants, though unsuccessful due to lack of direct lobbying on various levels, mainly national. I'm thinking about starting to write proposals for smaller research grants.

Can you provide some brief insights into possible strategies in engaging relatively unknown fund-providers and effective communication to align mutual interests?
